The fascinating world of Gypsy culture
is almost mythic and magical for most of us, but the truth
is far from fairy tale and closer to the way indigenous
groups have been mistreated and marginalized. Noche
Azul de Esperanza presents a selection of songs from the
gypsy cultures of Romania, Hungary, Spain, Macedonia and
more, where music is an essential part of daily life.
Come join us on this musical journey of
love and beauty, stories and sadness, passion and pride.

CD Release Party:
Joël Dilley's A New World
featuring Azul Barrientos, Bett Butler,
Cecil R. Carter, Lloyd Herrman,
& Jonathan Raveneau
Carmens de la Calle Cafe
720 E. Mistletoe
San Antonio TX 78212
210.737-TAPA (8272)
Two shows, 8:30 & 10 pm
$10 cover per show
Join us to celebrate the birth of this
new music, the inspiration for which ranges from the
personal to the universal ("Song for Derek," "Letter to
William"); from poetry and literature to painting and
sculpture ("The Hammock," "Street of the Seven Angels,"
"Scattered Shadows"); from folk music to urban beat to
classical ("Streets of Kaliningrad," "When We Meet Again,"
"Will's Bassment"). Created through
multi-tracking, the album retains a spontaneous feel, as
many of the arrangements ―inspired by sections of
improvisation ―were devised by the musicians "on the fly."
Cover is $10 per show. (If you come for
the first show and would like to stay for the second, cover
for the second show will be half-price.)
Reservations aren't
required (in fact, Carmen's probably won't even take
reservations), but we'd be delighted if you'd reply to this
e-mail and let us know if you're coming. |

A Time to Say Thank You....

It takes a village to bring creative
work to fruition, and this project could not have happened without the
love and support of many.
We are so grateful for the awesomely
generous musicians who contributed their ideas and
efforts to this project: Jonathan Raveneau
on violin, keyboard, and vocals (with a cameo
performance on cajon); Lloyd Herrman on drums;
tbow Gonzales on percussion; Cecil Carter on flugelhorn;
Jartse Tuominen on guitar; Azul Barrientos on guitar and vocals;
Richard Oppenheim on saxophone; and Gabriel
Herrera on vocals. We are very blessed to live in a
region so rich in talent and imagination.
Thanks to our dear friend, amazing artist
Courtney Reid, who allowed us to use her beautiful
painting Nautilus for this album cover. (Her work
Strange Fruit is on the cover of Bett's Myths & Fables,
and her Moonraker provides the cover of Joël's The
Window.) And thanks to another dear friend, poet /
author / columnist Roberto Bonazzi, for
encouragement, inspiration, and his
thoughtful and incisive liner notes (ditto on the last two
albums).
Thanks to our independent college radio stations:
KRTU 91.7 fm, whose 17 hours of daily jazz programming never
fails to inspire us, and KSYM 90.1 fm, whose Saturday
morning jazz programming has swung the airwaves longer than
any other station in the
city.
Thanks to the venues who present jazz, especially our
friends at Carmen's de la Calle Café and Casbeers.
Thanks to our good friend, outstanding musician and creative talent Ben King of
Talking Taco Records, for our digital distribution.
Special thanks to our sponsors Pat
and John Heard, who have supported us over the years with their
friendship and more.
Thanks to photographers Jack Leyva and Melanie
Rush Davis.
Special thanks to the Texas
Music Coalition, who recently chose Bett to receive the
inaugural Fred
Weiss Memorial Grant for professional development. This was
especially meaningful to us, as Weiss, a popular and dedicated
leader in San
Antonio College's Radio / Television / Film department, was
a never-failing source of encouragement to us when our
studio was still a very humble hole in the wall.
Most of all, thanks to YOU, who regularly
read our newsletters, come
to our gigs, and support us by purchasing our music. Without you, we
wouldn't be able to do this work we love. We are very, very grateful.
Sincerely, Bett & Joël |
